ABOUT OUR LAND CODE
WHAT IS A LAND CODE?

A land code is the land law developed by our own community for managing our reserve lands. It replaces the 44 land management sections of the Indian Act that currently empower the federal government to manage our lands.

Our land code returns jurisdiction over our reserve lands back to our community!

WHY WOULD WE WANT TO MANAGE OUR OWN LANDS?

Canada is no longer involved in our reserve lands. Tseycum First Nation now has independent control over our own reserve, making it community-driven, for our people ~ by our people!
The Tseycum First Nation Land Code empowers us to go back to the ways we used to manage our lands, teachings, and practices. No more delays. No more red tape! Tseycum First Nation no longer needs to wait for Canada. We can now control our own projects and complete files faster and on our own schedule.

Our land code lays out a number of essential governing functions, which include transparency and accountability to the membership in all decisions relating to our lands. The land code is "the people's land law", and not a tool that can only be used by a chosen few.

What other First Nations are involved in Land Code?
As of August 1, 2025, there are 227 First Nations across Canada (signatories and wait-listed First Nations) that are involved in the Framework Agreement. Tseycum First Nation is the 126th of these Nations to pass a land code, governing their lands and resources under their own land law. The remaining communities are working towards this goal.
